WHAT IS A MICROWAVE BOILER?
A microwave boiler uses the same science that powers your microwave oven, but with a far more advanced solid-state technology to heat water efficiently. The microwave boiler will be able to directly replace your old gas boiler with no new radiators or plumbing required.
WILL A MICROWAVE BOILER COST MORE?
The microwave boiler will be about the same as a gas boiler to purchase, and running over its lifetime will be similar in running and maintenance costs. While gas is currently cheaper than the electricity, the longer life expectancy and lower maintenance costs of the microwave boiler will offset a lot of this difference
WHY DO WE NEED NEW BOILERS?
The UK Government has decided to phase out gas boilers as part of its initiative to meet its net zero carbon obligations. Starting in 2024 in Scotland, new build homes will not be allowed to have gas boilers fitted and by 2035 you will not be able to purchase a replacement gas boiler. Their aim is to have as many CO emitting boilers removed from UK homes and work places by 2040.
WHAT ARE THE OTHER ALTERNATIVES TO A GAS BOILER?
To date the main alternatives to gas boilers have been heat pumps. While heat pumps can be very efficient as they exploit temperature differences, they are expensive to install and typically cost around between £15,000 - £18,000 for an average home. According to a number of technical papers prepared for the UK by various leading bodies it is estimated that over 80% of existing UK homes would not be suitable for a heat pump to be installed.
Hydrogen boilers might one day be suitable for home heating but today there is no widespread supply of hydrogen gas to homes, and to enable this would cost a vast amount and take many years. While the Scottish Government has already ruled out Hydrogen as a domestic heating option, the UK Government is yet to review their position, this will take until 2028. However, they have already strongly suggested it isn’t viable just on a pure economics principle, with hydrogen so costly and power intensive to produce in the first place.
We believe that the most efficient and effective clean alternative to gas boilers will be the microwave boiler.
WHEN WILL PEOPLE BE ABLE TO BUY MICROWAVE BOILERS?
We have prototypes going in to test this year, with a number of organisations and the expectation is to progress our manufacturing and have first units available in 2025.
CAN YOU TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT HEAT WAYV?
Heat Wayv is a British company that has been formed by two engineers and innovators who were looking to find better and cleaner ways to heat our homes. Before Heat Wayv, the founders used microwave technology to invent a new, safe and clean way for our armed forces to reheat meals when deployed in the field.
IS HEAT WAYV ALREADY MANUFACTURING?
Heat Wayv is working with its key suppliers and manufacturing partner already. Once the company is through prototype trials it will move into manufacturing and this is anticipated in 2024.
WHO INVENTED THE MICROWAVE BOILER?
The solid state microwave boiler was invented by Heat Wayv and it holds the relevant patents on the technology.
WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS MODEL?
We will be manufacturing in volume from 2024 and these microwave boiler units will be available under the Heat Wayv brand. We will be working with a number of installers directly as well as through recognised distributor channels, all much in the same way existing boiler manufacturers operate.
I'M AN ENGINEER – WHAT QUALIFICATIONS WILL I NEED TO INSTALL A HEAT WAYV BOILER?
The great news here is, if you are heating engineer your existing competencies covers the requirements for a Heat Wayv boiler install.
We are exploring the possibility to run some product training courses to provide product awareness, and these, if we run them, will be found and offered through your usual training providers
HOW CAN I REQUEST A DEMO?
We have assembled a cohort of trial group members who have kindly agreed to take part in our early trials, the group consists of a broad spectrum of installers from across the industry, these range from new home builders, to social housing providers, installers and academic partners.
This phase of trial is restricted to enable us to focus on each installer type and their respective requirements.
During 2024 we expect to be in attendance at a number of key trade and consumer events, at these events we plan to show our products to a wider audience.
